AR Training Course 3/19-3/21 The Adventure Race Training Course was last week & it was jam packed, full of instruction/field practice with high level physical & mental challenges that likened it to a multi-day race. Plenty of classroom time for navigation skills, sports nutrition, gear selection, etc. We were also in the field for about 25 miles—running, orientating, mountain biking and canoing. Then there was the 4 hour Ropes course! All a prelude to the 22 mile Sprint Race on Sunday.
What kind of people leave their jobs, comfort of their homes, family and friends—some of them traveling several hundreds of miles to Kansas—to learn about Adventure Racing? A journalist asked me that question yesterday, and I didn’t have a clear answer.

After the "big" race last fall, many racers suggested offering a shorter
distance race--a Sprint. Major Greg Harris then offered up some possible
courses and it hit the calendar. There was only going to be 25 teams, but I
allowed a few more since many were 2 person teams--then as I slept on
Feb 28th, many racers took advantage of last minute registration and the
outcome was a field of over 100 racers on a 20-25 course.
Planning a race is much more involved than it may appear and I would really
like to thank my family and friends for handling my stress level well. First,
the course & the distance were determined. Then the course was
redetermined for an alternate water course that would eliminate about 95%
need for last minute changes. Ropes of course needed to be added, but I
didn't feel comfortable with my basic level of knowledge--so went to the best
for help. Tony Mayse from Oklahoma gave me the confidence and skill I
needed to make it a reality. My family kids me a little about my efforts to
support the economic stimulus during the ropes inventory acquisition--but
we are so set for climbing now!
The weather seemed a little bleak for race day with a horrific wind forecast
that would leave about 80 people swimming for miles in Milford Lake during
the watercourse. Being the optimist that I am, I assumed the forecast would
prove to be wrong. MORE RACE STORY . . .
