BACK IT UP

A series of 5k, 10k and 15k trail races brings cross country trail racing to the lake on a challenging and scenic course (most challenging in the state of
KS?--overheard a few times) that winds through most of the 100 acres at Acorns Resort (includes hills, creeks, ravines, forests, rocks and switchbacks).

All races start at 10am.
Race Dates:
Apr 10th, May 22nd, Sep 18th and October 30th.  September race is the big one, racers pick your favorite local non-profit organization (local United
Way non-profits), gather donations if you want, race for your projected time and really back it up.

Registration is $10,  COMING AGAIN IN 2010!
Or register on race day at 9-9:30am at Acorns Resort.

The "Liminal Trail" is a perfect 5k distance, so 10k racers will get to see all the rugged Kansas beauty twice in one day. The trail was created with
the focus of a protected course that would showcase Flint Hills scenery and, at the same time, give racers a surprising new perspective of the
region and themselves--hence the trail name.

Liminal means threshold . . . "a place where boundaries dissolve a little and we stand there, on the threshold, getting ourselves ready to move
across the limits of what we were and what we are now to be".  Places that are liminal are . . . springs, caves, shores, rivers, volcanic calderas,
fords, passes, crossroads, bridges, and marshes.
Liminal states are characterized by ambiguity, openness, and indeterminacy. . . .a period of transition where normal limits to thought,
self-understanding, and behavior are relaxed - a situation which can lead to new perspectives.

This trail race will not produce times equivalent to 5k/10k road races.  Expect to add to your best time about 6 min
for the 5k and 13 min for the 10k. This course is a complete work out (mental and physical).
Energy wise, you should feel like you've ran 4 miles instead of three and 8 miles instead of 6.

If you have weak ankles or knees and sometimes wear support, this would be one of those times.
Also, protective eyewear is a very good idea
if you are A) aggressive and will want to pass
B)  very tall or C) occasionally off balance.  Please feel free to come for one of our group runs on Tuesday evenings beginning Feb 10th at
4:30pm-5:30pm to familiarize yourself and get a great workout.  For out of the area racers, walk through of the trail will be possible on race day
between 7am-9am.

Unless you have an aversion to the outdoors, this trail is going to be one of your best race memories!

Forecasts of storms and high winds seem to have kept
some people home on race day.  But even though the
race crowd was small, they packed A LOT of power in on
Liminal Trail.  The trail is in it’s full Summer glory now
with plenty of vegetation and cover, so racers weren’t the
least bit bothered by high winds or heat.  Granted it was
a great day to run, but I was still amazed at the times racers
nailed!  This race report would have been posted
sooner, but I had to run the 10k for time last night just to see
if I could come close to their times.  Nope.  I can’t
see under 57 min.

Vincent, Michael, Christine and Megan owned the 10k
between 49 and 56 minutes and other racers in the field
brought in times that would placed them higher on other
races . . . impressive across the board.  Running a road
5k or 10k might seem more like stretching than work after
facing “Liminal”.  I have to applaud Aiden for taking on
the 5k at 11 yrs old.  Course if you try to tell people that haven’
t been on the trail that you did a 5k, I doubt they
will quite understand what you accomplished Saturday
morning—you should be very proud!

Perfect weather and great company on the trail this morning!   Even better
though, we raised $615 in donations to 4 local United Way Organizations.
So even with a small turnout, we were able to make a big difference.  Just
goes to show you what 14 people (mostly strangers) can do in an hour on
a Saturday morning in September--while getting a great workout at the
same time.  That's exactly what Back It Up is all about, thank you all!

Special thanks to Kim Neidenthal (and Christine Stewart) for the great effort
on your pledges and making us back it up too (matching donations)!  Ft
Riley's Operation Wheels (Armed Services YMCA) is getting a check for
$425 in a large part because of your pledges.  Many other racers kicked in
extra money for the same organization and the others, adding up to
(including matches to the 1st place 5k/10k winners choice) $50 to the
Junction City YMCA, $50 to Konza Prairie Community Health Center and
$90 to the local Special Olympics local team, the JC Pacesetters.

Thanks again, see you on the trail!
