The inaugural Back It Up race on Liminal Trail was yesterday.  Truth be told, there was some speculation at Acorns Resort if the weather may
keep racers from coming.  As a runner myself, I was certain racers would not be swayed by windchills hovering at 0 degrees.  I was concerned
that my late night MTB trip of the trail on Friday to place ropes/ribbons would be found to be pointless in the AM with the 30 mph winds.

But, the only thing the weather really stopped was this great speech I had planned to celebrate the first race, the new trail, the vision of more
and longer trail races, the expressing of gratitude to my family and friends for their support and work on the trail and race preparation, the
recognition of soldiers from Fort Riley, the brief philosophy of liminal physical and mental states and the inspirational request that I intended to
ask of racers to find youth in their local community to get involved with trail racing and the outdoors in general.  I considered giving the whole 5
minute speech until I was faced with a group of runners who appeared they may freeze to death if they didn't get down the trail soon!  The
volunteers that did show up faced even a greater challenge of waiting out the cold without the benefit of strenuous movement--THANK YOU!

The runners had great times and seemed to enjoy the trail, though the technical level probably was a surprise to most.  One of the biggest
challenges of running a race in the woods is having a finish line apparent to the racers.  One racer, when he couldn't be sure if he had
completed 10k, just kept going as he didn't want to short himself distance and ended up doing a 15K.  Both his 10k time and the finishing of
the 15k are both course records.  Jeff Kennedy from Fort Riley is my hero!   And the children of the Duda family from Pomona, KS who patiently
waited through the bone chilling cold for their mother's race to be over so that they could run the 1 mile course had exactly the kind of great
sportsmanship attitude I had hoped to see but thought I may have to wait several races for.  Great job you guys!  I hope to see everyone back for
the next race on April 25th and maybe it will be warm enough to have normal registration and awards ceremony next time!  If you got 1st., 2nd or
3rd place and/or ordered a tshirt, please watch your mailbox in the next couple of weeks (medals may take longer than tshirts).
