2008 Milford Lake Extreme--Tyler Tate, Team Awesome Extreme
" . . . I was just out there because the allure of sanctioned insanity is irresistible. Normally I wouldn’t tromp through poison ivy and cross creeks on downed
trees….The sun was still low in the sky and the weather was perfect.  We were out in the middle of nowhere. You could see forever and still not see a
road/house/town anything but fields.  We checked our map and continued south east on our bikes. . .
"I shall be telling this with a sigh, Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference"
…we took the dirt road. I think Frost must have been a mountain biker. . .We bombed the steep dirt road and ended up at the entrance of a field. "Thank" you
Robert Frost!  All 4 of us now have pushed ourselves farther than we have ever gone.
“You don’t know you’re wearing a leash if you sit by the peg all day” (Charmion says Amen Brother!)
2009 Extreme Spring Sprint~Katie Premo, TEAM Mustache Madness
First off-THANK YOU!   Your race absolutely ROCKED!  Our team had a blast-through sweat and blood,
bitter cold lake water, heads spinning from determination to find checkpoints -we experienced the
'extreme' element to say the least.  We learned a few lessons along the way (Kansas winds are
UNFORGIVING, familiarizing yourself with the land is half the battle and power gels can be a lifesaver!
ha!!)  We laughed together though, took out our frustrations on the trails and finished as a TEAM.  Thanks
again to you and all the volunteers for an amazing race!!  See you on the trail.....
After the "big" race last fall, many racers suggested offering a shorter distance race--a Sprint.  Major Greg Harris
then offered up some possible courses and it hit the calendar.  There was only going to be 25 teams, but I
allowed a few more since many were 2 person teams--then as I slept on Feb 28th, many racers took advantage
of last minute registration and the outcome was a field of over 100 racers on a 20-25 course.

Planning a race is much more involved than it may appear and I would really like to thank my family and friends
for handling my stress level well.  First, the course & the distance were determined. Ropes needed to be added,
but I didn't feel comfortable with my basic level of knowledge--so went to the best for help.
Tony Mayse from
Oklahoma gave me the confidence and skill I needed to make it a reality.  My family kids me about my efforts to
support the economic stimulus during the ropes inventory acquisition--but we are so set for climbing now!

There was a horrific wind forecast that would leave about 80 people swimming for miles in Milford Lake during
the watercourse.  Being the optimist that I am, I assumed the forecast would prove to be wrong.
2009-Extreme Spring Sprint Race--from the Race Director
Well, I've had to learn the hard way on a few occasions, and this would prove to be another one.  Odds are, in Kansas it will probably blow 38 mi/hr if that's what
the forecast says.  If it says rain on the other hand, forget it.  The new watercourse changed everything and I pulled an all nighter redoing race materials.   The
meltdown came when everyone arrived and I still wasn't ready for the race.  Thanks to the wonderful 1st time volunteers who jumped in without hesitation and took
control, the prerace began.  Ellen, Kylee and Emily,  if your dentist office and care are anything like the demonstration given on race day, everyone should switch
their dentistry care to
Advanced Dental Care.   And thanks to all of  the other wonderful volunteers!

Some racers told me that this was a little more than they bargained for in a Sprint Race.  I'm not kidding when I say "Extreme" and upcoming races will continue to
demonstrate that.  But to all the racers who came out on Sunday, I have to say everyone had a great race and I am really impressed! You were given a tough
course and you came through with a  lot of physical determination and mental strength--you should be very proud!
