The "Liminal Trail" is a perfect 5k distance, so 10k racers will get to see all the rugged Kansas beauty twice in one day. The trail was created with the focus of a protected course that would showcase Flint Hills scenery and, at the same time, give racers a surprising new perspective of the region and themselves--hence the trail name. Liminal means threshold . . . "a place where boundaries dissolve a little and we stand there, on the threshold, getting ourselves ready to move across the limits of what we were and what we are now to be". Places that are liminal are . . . springs, caves, shores, rivers, volcanic calderas, fords, passes, crossroads, bridges, and marshes. Liminal states are characterized by ambiguity, openness, and indeterminacy. . . .a period of transition where normal limits to thought, self-understanding, and behavior are relaxed - a situation which can lead to new perspectives. This trail race will not produce times equivalent to 5k/10k road races. Expect to add to your best time about 6 min for the 5k and 13 min for the 10k. This course is a complete work out (mental and physical). Energy wise, you should feel like you've ran 4 miles instead of three and 8 miles instead of 6. If you have weak ankles or knees and sometimes wear support, this would be one of those times. Also, protective eyewear is a very good idea if you are A) aggressive and will want to pass B) very tall or C) occasionally off balance. Please feel free to come for one of our group runs on Tuesday evenings beginning Feb 10th at 4:30pm-5:30pm to familiarize yourself and get a great workout. For out of the area racers, walk through of the trail will be possible on race day between 7am-8am. Unless you have an aversion to the outdoors, this trail is going to be one of your best race memories! |
