Volunteer at an Adventure Race
Witnessing a race first-hand, seeing how it unfolds and watching why teams fail or succeed is an excellent way to gain
perspective on what you need to do to get ready for your first race. In some ways, a volunteer can learn more than a
competitor in the race as volunteers can see the successes and pitfalls of all the teams in the race. A first time competitor
languishing near the back of the pack will only learn through rumours what the lead teams did differently to be so far ahead.
Also, for those that do not know many people interested in adventure racing, becoming a volunteer can throw you into an
entire community of active and would-be adventure racers making the search for teammates that much easier.  Volunteers
that commit to and spend at least 8 hrs (for the Sprint/AR races) or 3 hrs (for the trail races) in one day may receive a free
tshirt (1st 20 volunteers), free camping, free meal(s) and discounted future race registration fee (up to $45 off).

What would I do?
Manned Checkpoints:  Staff checkpoints throughout event.  You will have direct interaction with racers and will be
responsible for checking and recording each team and their time when they arrive.  You may also check gear and render
assistance when needed (communicating issues with race director).  Older children (usually over 12 yrs old) are great for
this position as long as they are paired with an adult driver (except for trail races--no driving necessary).

Registration/Timing:  Assist staff with racer check in and registration, monitor event timing and record finishers final times.
Need basic administrative and math skills.

Event Safety/Medical:  Monitor racers at remote locations for signs of medical or physical problems.  Must have a
minimum of CPR/Advanced First Aid current certification or higher.  ATVs or bicycles may be used in these positions.

Water Safety:  Monitor racers during water sections of the race--ranging from ponds to creeks to lakes to rivers.  Must be
able to throw rescue device and perform basic water rescue if needed.

Photography:  Travel by yourself or with the race director and staff/other volunteers and capture the action!

Volunteers will need to attend a pre-race meeting.  If you live out of the area and can't make it to the meeting, information
will be forwarded to you via email.  If you are at a manned checkpoint, you will probably want to bring a folding chair, cell
phone, snacks and drinks for the day.  Volunteers can only share "authorized" race information with racers.
